Scenario: You are working in a hospital that has no CIO.  The hospital budget only allows for a director of IT.  The hospital is looking to upgrade their operating system facility wide.  Examples of operating systems include Meditech, Evident, etc.

  • Do you think the absence of a full-time CIO has an impact on a project of this magnitude? Why or why not?
  • What steps should the director of IT take to ensure that the new software will be purchased and implemented? What do you see as the critical first step in this process? Why?
  • Discuss who you think should serve on the project steering committee. Who should serve as chair? Why?
  • At this point, what do you think is a realistic time frame for implementation of the new software? What steps can be taken to ensure the new timeline is met despite competing priorities?
