Overview of TPSs
We'll take the first 10 minutes of most classes to engage in a think-pair-share (TPS). It's a simple activity where I give everyone a question, then you take a few minutes thinking about a solution on your own. Next, you pair up with a partner (or two) and try to reach a consensus on the solution. After a few minutes, I poll the class for some volunteers to share their answer and help guide the class to the solution. Each of these stages is important in helping you test what you know and fix what you misunderstand about the material.
Please make a copy of this Google Document template Links to an external site.; throughout the semester, you should place your TPSs—both your solution and your pair's solution—into this document. Submit this updated document to every TPS Canvas assignment.
In addition, someone from your pair/group should add your group answer to the collaborative TPS document for the day. Attribution is optional.
On to the first TPS
We haven't learned anything in this class yet! So, to start us off, please answer the questions below.
In your copy of the TPS Google doc (see above), please list the following pieces of information about yourself:
- your preferred name and how to pronounce it you think that's helpful

- your major / minor and year (first year, sophomore, etc.)
- your prior programming experience, if any
- why you're taking this class
- how you think programming is useful to your field of study
- your Discord nickname on the CSC160 server (so others can contact you)
If you are joining the class live (in person or over Zoom), please use Discord or your preferred means of interacting with someone to introduce yourself to one or two of your classmates (please see the announcement with details about Discord).
You do not need to update the "Pair" or "Share" column of in your TPS Google doc (you will for future TPSs).
Regardless of whether or not you are attending live, please add you info to the "Class bios" in Canvas Collaborations. Refer to this page anytime you need to find someone in class to partner with on an assignment.
