Homework: Project Management & effort estimation

Read the following:

• skim Ch. 13 Links to an external site. in "Essentials of Software Engineering" (3rd Edition), concentrating on sections 13.3.1 and 13.3.2
• read the Wikipedia article on "Planning poker Links to an external site."

Note: work breakdown structure (WBS) as described in section 13.3.2 of the book and Planning poker are both expert estimation techniques, as opposed to the other estimation techniques outlined in section 13.3.1, which are formal estimation techniques.

Write a few paragraphs reflecting on the following questions:

• which classes of estimation techniques (expert or formal) do you think would be better (easier to estimate, more accurate, etc.)
• suppose your company uses Planning poker to estimate tasks effort for sprints; does that preclude WBS from being used for the project? (explain)
• Planning poker is often used for Scrum; how might it be applied to Kanban?
