Division of Labor

First, visit this interactive summary of Adam Smith's description of a pin factory, in the early days of the Industrial Revolution in Scotland.

You can also read Smith's description, which is the brief Chapter 1 in On the Wealth of Nations. Links to an external site.

(Since Wealth of Nations was published in 1776, the language is a bit antiquated, but readable.)

Then in a posting of a paragraph or two, explain the division of labor (or labor specialization) in a business or organization that you are familiar with. In your posting, explain how the division of labor increases the productivity of the business or organizations. Please post by Friday.

Then replay to two or more classmates with suggestions for improving productivity even more. Creativity is fine, up to "science fiction." Please post by Sunday.
